Reading for the Holidays

Deans Message

OK so I went a little overboard on my Dean’s newsletter message this semester so here it is in full

Welcome to the Honors College newsletter. Normally the Deans message section of Newsletters you would get a little piece that tells you how wonderful we are and what great things the students are doing, and while that is certainly true, I thought given we are coming up to the Holiday Season I might take a slightly different approach to the Dean’s message. This semester I have had the privilege of working with students in several classes based on set readings and I thought it might be of interest to you to know about some things that the students were reading in the Honors Book Club and in other programs. These maybe books that you would want to read yourself or perhaps give as gifts to people, this Holiday Season.

Understanding the Big Bang

Large Hadron Collider is a GO

Well today is a great day for those of us who complete science nerds Large Hadron Collider was fired up at CERN. Experiments to be conducted at CERN will help us understand the fundamental nature of the universe and perhaps ultimately enable us to understand gravity. It is very clear that scientists at CERN are very excited about the success of this first day; the time of this writing both beams have now completed at least one circuit after the tunnel. In fact several of them have got together and put together a “rap” which I recommend as both educational and fun.

Ozy and Millie Cartoon

The first thing I do when I open a newspaper is to turn to the funny pages but recently I’ve been becoming more and more disenchanted by the offerings that are presented in the newspapers. Not simply local newspapers but even national newspapers it seems as if as far as cartoons are concerned with stuck had some sort of monopoly which continues to publish the same comics over and over, many of which were first published in the 50’s or 60’s, and doesn’t seem willing to allow the introduction of new comics.

Welcome to Walking Huxley

Walking Huxley is an occasional blog of the Honors College Dean. It is a place for random comments and links, reflections and of course the occasional rant.

Why Walking Huxley?

Huxley is my dog and since he is sort of large he needs his exercise. Our walks are a time for random reflection in my day. During these walks Huxley will occasionally try to take off after squirrels, turkey, deer etc,. So with its reflection and the occasional random leap in an unexpected direction a walk with Huxley seemed an appropriate metaphor for a blog.
