Zachary | April 14th, 2009

Honors students: We’ve received word from Dr. Reymond in the department of art and design of a new course being offered in the fall of this year. The course will be titled ARHS 494A: Great Universal Expositions of the Nineteenth and Early Twentieth Centuries and will ecompass a variety of topics.

Topics may include: engineering projects such as the Crystal Palace and Eiffel Tower; planning of the exposition grounds, displays mounted by various countries, artwork that was shown in buildings beside those dedicated to art, influence of the art and design of one country upon another, the introduction or popularization of new art and design movements, examples of how nationalism was expressed, the exhibition of people and objects considered primitive or quaint at the time, advertising posters, books, collectibles and trinkets that promoted the expositions, work of specific artists or movements, pageantry and the ephemeral nature of world’s fairs, expositions held in countries not covered in detail in class, etc.

The course will be major and level (junior and senior only) restricted, but Dr. Reymond will be willing to make an exception for interested Honors students.

Please see the attached flyer for more details.

Have a great day!
