Indiana Teaching Fellowship

Zachary | September 19th, 2008

Honors students: We’ve gotten word of an exciting fellowship opportunity for those of you pursuing studies in education. Read on . . .

From the Woodrow Wilson National Foundation:
I am sending along news of an exciting new Fellowship from the Woodrow Wilson National Fellowship Foundation that seeks to recruit talented college graduates and midcareer professionals to teaching in science, technology, engineering, and math (the STEM fields). As the Woodrow Wilson Indiana Teaching Fellowship selects its inaugural class, we invite you to nominate students or share word of the program with others who might be interested.

Woodrow Wilson’s Indiana Fellowship offers rigorous teaching preparation, extensive clinical experience, and ongoing mentoring, as well as a $30,000 stipend. These new Woodrow Wilson Fellows will be STEM scholars and experts‑ outstanding college juniors and seniors majoring in these fields, recent college graduates, and second‑ career professionals‑ interested in teaching in high‑ need secondary schools.

Accepted Fellows will begin their studies in summer 2009 in a master’s degree program at one of four participating universities: Ball State University, Indiana University‑ Purdue University Indianapolis, Purdue University, and the University of Indianapolis. In exchange, Fellows will commit to teach math or science in a high‑ need Indiana secondary school for three years upon completing the master’s degree and Indiana teaching certification.

The intent of this program is both to bring talented people into teaching in much‑ needed areas and also to help elevate the status of teaching. As a fellowship advisor, you may already know that Fellows from various Woodrow Wilson programs have gone on to achieve international recognition as intellectual leaders and top scholars, including 13 Nobel Laureates, 35 MacArthur “genius grant” fellows, and two Fields Medalists in mathematics. The WW Indiana Teaching Fellows will become lifelong members of that same network of scholars and intellectual leaders.

Please take a moment to review the Fellowship terms at www.woodrow.org/teachindiana and encourage any interested students to apply. All applications are due by December 15, 2008. Any questions may be directed to Dana DiLullo at 609‑ 452‑ 7007×141, or by email to WWTeachingFellowships@woodrow.org.

I hope you share the Foundation’s sense that this Fellowship, which extends Woodrow Wilson’s longstanding commitment to the preparation of teachers and scholars, is a critically important initiative for the nation, for Indiana, and for the young people who most need excellent teachers in these fields. Thank you, in advance, for helping spread the word about this opportunity.
