Here are the specifics on the International Media Class that we will be teaching in the Fall 08 semester.
We think this may be a wonderful opportunity for your Honors College Students interested in International Media, Latin American Studies (history, politics, archeology), Spanish or Political Science. The class is open to anyone, undergraduates and graduates. Although originall y we opened the class for freshmen and seniors only, we would gladly accept any freshman or sophomore who your college considers is mature enough for the travel abroad experience. _
_The class is called International Media (CRN 87269. Course number: JRL 493D for undergraduates and JRL 693B for graduates) and there are two components to it. There’s a weekly lecture in the fall ( 2credit class) and a two week trip to Peru during Winter break, Dec 26 to January 10, (1 credit class)
The class will meet on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 8:00pm to learn and discuss how media work in a different culture and therefore gain a greater appreciation of how media work in their own culture. We would like for them to develop a keener awareness of cultural and political differences, analyze wow the social, political and geographical background influences the practice of journalism and citizen participation in a society. We will use lectures and readings, but also have documentaries, movies and guest speakers to cover the different issues.
During the two-week trip to Peru we will visit newsrooms and museums in Lima and will have sessions with journalists and academics who will tell us more about their job, journalism in Peru, the relationship with the government and the citizenry, etc. (We will also get to taste delicious Peruvian food!)
Students do not need to know Spanish (seminars and visits to museums and excursions will be translated) however, if they do know a little bit of Spanish, a trip to Peru definitely offers them a way sharpen language skills by immersing them in a different culture and seeing how it works on a daily basis. _
_The trip will cost around $3,000 and that includes all the airfares, trains, excursions, breakfasts, lodging, etc. It doesn’t include most lunches and dinners.
Being a journalist from Peru, I am extremely excited about this new class and the opportunity to expand our students’ views on journalism, South America and US- Latin America relations.
I would be glad to answer any questions students may have. They can email me, call me or stop by my office to talk about it. I am also attaching a flyer we designed to promote the class.
Many thanks!
