essay questions for 2008 Honors College applications

What essay questions do you think next year’s Honors College first-years should answer for the application process? We already have a few submissions, but leave a comment if you have an idea. We’ll pick the questions to send to Dr. Garbutt to approve at the next Student Advisory Committee meeting (Thursday September 20 at 6:00 PM in the Glass Lounge). Even if you can’t make the meeting, leave a comment with your ideas. To get your creative juices flowing, here are some of the suggestions we’ve already received…
- There has been a great deal of commotion pertaining to the unprecedented early campaigning for the 2008 presidency. What do you think this says about the state of the country and how do you think such early campaigning will affect the outcome of the election?
- What do you feel is currently the biggest threat, internally or externally, to achieving the so-called “American Dream”?
- If we were able to interview an inanimate object of your choosing about your acceptance into the Honors College, what would it have to say?
Articles
There have been a few monumental inventions/discoveries in the history of humankind (e.g. fire, the wheel, the number zero). What lies ahead?
I think it would be beneficial to get the new guys thinking about the global economy/culture. Maybe something like…would you choose to live in a country outside of the US and why? What benefits do you see of being a citizen? What disbenefits? Or just what do you think globalization means for the average American?
I just stumbled across this question online and thought it was an interesting one…
