Life Math the real cost of Medical School

Keith | October 15th, 2007

A “must read” for all pre-meds

This weekend I came across a remarkable article, in JAMA (Journal of the American Medical Association) that I really feel you MUST read is you intend to become an MD. The article “Life Math” by Marion Bishop, MD, PhD JAMA. 2007;298:266-268. is by a woman who has just

completed her residency and reflects on the costs and benefits, monetary, personal and emotional, of becoming an MD.

This is one of the most remarkable reflections on the impact of becoming an MD on all aspects of your life I have read and I really encourage you to read it you need to understand what is ahead of you.

The article can be found at http://jama.ama-assn.org/cgi/content/extract/298/3/266 If you are on campus you may be able to go directly to it, if you are off campus you will have to access it via the library web site.

Over the last couple of weeks I have been talking to a lot of you who want to go to medical school and have been giving you the article by Sarah Kliff from the September 10th issue of Newsweek if you are not my advisee I would encourage you to read this article as well as the one above
